The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost (1961) Poem Activities
Proficiency level of students: Pre-Intermediate
Name of the activity: The Road That Changed the Direction of My Life
Instructions: I will show students the fork in a forest road that is divided into two. These two roads will have almost equal characteristics with each other. (color of the leaves, how long the road has been walked on, etc.) I will leave the choice of roads to the students' free will and ask them to first write down why they chose that road, then what they may encounter on that road and what will happen to them in the future if they choose that road. I will match students who choose different roads with each other. (The student choosing the 1st road will be matched with the student who chose the 2nd road.) The students, who exchange their writings with each other, will see what they can encounter on the road they did not choose, with the comment of the other student. Thus, they will witness the adventure of both roads.
The aim of the activity: This activity aims to develop the student's imagination. Choosing a straight road and making a story out of that road pushes that student's creativity to its limit. During the activity, the student will feel like a movie writer. It will strengthen the communication between students. Students who exchange their writing with each other can give each other feedback. Students can tell each other where it was planned very well and where it was exaggerated and unnecessary. This activity will improve the student's writing skills. The student should evaluate the options wisely and ensure that the story flows. In this activity, which positively affects the student's storytelling, students will realize that they always have one chance in life. They will realize that they must work to ensure that the road they choose is straight and correct.
Possible drawbacks of the activity: Some shy students may not want the story they create by using their creativity to be read and interpreted by other students.
