Lamb to the Slaughter Activities - Roald Dahl (1953)

 LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER ACTIVITIES

Pre-Reading Activities

Instructions: In this activity, I will show the cartoons to students and ask some questions before reading the text.

For example;

  • What do a woman, a man and a lamb's feet could have in common?

  • What do you understand from the facial expressions of woman and man?

Rationale behind the activity: The rationale of this activity is to create an active conversation environment with students. Gathering information about the text through visual cues helps them to develop their creativity and critical thinking.

Pre-Reading Activity 2

Instructions: I will have the students watch the video I created with Voki. In this video, the main character  Mary Malooney, will briefly talk about the story.

Rationale behind this activity: This activity increases students' interest in the story. This activity allows students to make predictions and make them concentrate more on the story before they start reading.

Pre-Reading Activity 3

Instructions: I will read to students a paragraph that I have selected from the text and I will ask them questions and make predictions about the text, considering that paragraph.

“She knew he didn’t want to speak much until the first drink was finished, and she, on her side, was content to sit quietly, enjoying his company after the long hours alone in the house. She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel-almost as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm 25 male glow that came out of him to her when they were alone together. She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved intent, far look in his eyes when they rested in her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the way he remained silent about his tiredness, sitting still with himself until the whiskey had taken some of it away.”

Questions;

  • Does the woman's husband communicate with his wife?

  • Is the woman's life stable?

  • Given her love for her husband, is there any chance she might hurt him?

  • Is the woman naive or shrewd?

Rationale behind the activity: The rationale behind the activity is to try to connect with

the character's inner world. In this way, students have preliminary information about the course of the story.
